Today is a remarkable day for us, as we are very proud to announce the boldest step in the history of ERA-IX: expanding our footprint into Frankfurt, Germany. This is one of the largest internet hubs in the world and the perfect place for an honest peering and connectivity platform like ours.
Together with my partner Elias, we decided in 2022 to build a platform that would bring the much-needed change to the peering world. Completely developed from the ground up, without investors, sponsors, or any other financial aid, making us the true neutral internet exchange. Peering should be reliable and cost-effective, not dictated by bureaucratic internet exchanges.
After shaking up Amsterdam, it's now time to do the same in Frankfurt. The peering LAN will be extended between Amsterdam and Frankfurt using waves towards our first German PoP in Equinix FR5, allowing networks to optionally reach other networks across metros. I would like to emphasize that the transport feature is an opt-in; by default, we will not be exporting routes between metros.
Before ending this blog post, I would like to promise our current members and potential future members something that the big ones can't or won't:
- Our pricing model will always be honest.
- We will not be profit- or investor-driven.
- We will not outsource support, not even first-line; stay in touch with competent NOC engineers.
- There will be no sales team pushing for their commission.
- We will keep innovating and not just flex with the new 100G-LR1 optics.
- We will commit to maintaining our small environmental footprint (<2 kW currently).
- We will keep connecting new members.
So for us to do this, we truly need your support. If you're in any of our connected PoPs, consider joining ERA-IX so we can do more cool stuff like this :)
Reach out to our engineers for a amazing welcome promotion in Frankfurt and let us know which metro you want us to add in the future!
